Willamsport; Sunrise Sunset Susquehanna Paddle & Play

WILLIAMSPORT (July 12,2017) – The Second Annual Sunrise Sunset Susquehanna Paddle
& Play
to benefit Middle Susquehanna RIVERKEEPER®, a Waterkeeper Alliance SPLASH Series event presented nationally by Toyota, will take place Saturday, July 22 in Williamsport. This year’s day-long river celebration has three components.

Adventurous souls can partake in an 11-mile, professionally-guided, environmental awareness paddle, starting in Jersey Shore and landing at Susquehanna State Park. “The paddle,” explains Middle Susquehanna RIVERKEEPER® Carol Parenzan, “includes a light breakfast, a catered lunch, a shuttle, professional guide and safety services, an event keepsake, and wonderful river
memories made along a former logging route on the West Branch Susquehanna River.” For safety and planning purposes, all paddlers must pre-register for the paddling event by July 19, and individuals without personal kayaks may be able to rent a kayak as part of the registration process. An early bird registration discount is available through June 30. Through a special event partnership for this year’s paddle, Boy Scouts who are interested in participating should contact their Council directly for paddle registration information.

Landlubbers are invited to spend the afternoon along the river at Susquehanna State Park in Williamsport, where from 12 noon until 5pm, a variety of hands-on, family-friendly activities will be offered free of charge. From minnows to mapping, critters to crafts, yoga to qi gong, and live music to storytelling, participants young and old can engage in river-related
activities. Highlights of the afternoon’s events include musical river tales by folk musician Don Shappelle, twisted river creatures by Air Weaver Balloons, photography lessons with nature photographer Ian Adrian, and interactive environmental and outdoor educational exhibits and activities by local organizations and agencies.

As evening arrives, all eyes will turn to the sky as ticketed passengers will board the Hiawatha Paddlewheel Riverboat for a bird-watching, river-gazing, song-singing, and sweet-treat-eating cruise with Lycoming Audubon Society. “We are bringing a bit of sweet-treat fun to the river for the cruise,” offers Parenzan. “In partnership with Eat and Run and Sunset Ice Cream, guests will be treated to a specially created selection of ice cream sundaes with names such as Rocky River, Susquehanna Sunset, River Ripple, and Gone Fishing!” Loaner binoculars for birdwatching will be available on the cruise.

Middle Susquehanna RIVERKEEPER® is the full-time, paid professional WATERKEEPER® Alliance-licensed voice of the North and West Branches of the Susquehanna River, her tributaries, and drainage area. Protecting over 11,000-square miles of the Susquehanna River Watershed, Middle Susquehanna RIVERKEEPER® holds polluters accountable and works to bring swimmable, drinkable, fishable water to every resident of and visitor to our Mighty Susquehanna River watershed.
